There was a time when it seemed that DVDs would be around forever.  But alas, such is not the case.  It is getting harder to play DVDs.  DVD players are harder to come by.  Most laptops do not have DVD hardware or software and cannot play them.  Plus, DVDs deteriorate over time and it is likely that your DVDs are approaching the end of their useful life. 

DVDs operate by a laser beam that is reflected off the silver backing of the DVD to read little bumps as the DVD spins, much like a stylus reads the bumps on a vinyl record as it spins.  But this silver backing can become corrupt, either through oxidization or ink bleeding through the label of a DVD, and once that happens, a DVD cannot be read by consumer grade DVD players.

You also may have miniDVDs that you created using a miniDVD Camcorder.   Many users of such camcorders forgot that they had to finalize DVDs before they would be playable in a regular DVD player.  And when the camcorder broke, there was then no way to finalizze the DVDs and view their family recordings.
